A German work visa is an official government document issued by the German embassy. As a person of foreign nationality, you need a work visa to legally enter and reside in Germany for the purpose of employment. If you have the nationality of…
…a country of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland
You don’t need an entry visa or work visa for Germany.
Your education is recognised in Germany.
There are regulated occupations in Germany which require a special recognition. That often includes jobs in the medical, juristic and educational field as well as some proficiency degrees for master craftsmen and craftswomen.

You don’t need a visa to enter Germany.
You need a residence permit or a work visa for Germany.
If you want to start working immediately after arriving in Germany you need a work visa before coming to Germany.

You are only eligible to work in Germany if you have eighter a vocational qualification or a university degree.
Whether you received your educational qualification in Germany or outside of Germany, you need a work visa for Germany which is called opportunity card.
The Job seeker visa for Germany
A German work visa counts as a permit to enter the country as well as to work in Germany. To apply for a work visa for Germany you already need a contract of employment. The work visa is connected to the job and ends when the employment ends or changes.
The opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a type of Job seeker visa for Germany. It is a residence permit, that allows you to enter and stay in Germany for the duration of one year to look for a job. You don’t need a contract of employment prior to coming to Germany.

To acquire a German work visa you need to be prepared to show the following documents:
Valid passport
Additional biometrical passport photo
Filled out visa application forms
Proof, that you have paid the visa fee (e.g. a transfer voucher, receipt for payment)
Valid health insurance
Sufficient salary
Travel documents (entry and exit documents)
Certified translations (of personal certificates, educational qualifications, legal or medical documents)
